Accounting Vs. Finance Degree

Finance Degree

A Finance Degree is a more wholesome degree with emphasis on real estate, investment, etc and accounting becomes a choice that you might want to consider.

Accounting Degree

An accounting degree concentrates on accounting and auditing principles and practices and knowledge in finance, marketing and investment becomes a choice.

Finance vs. Accounting Degree

A Finance degree does not concentrate on accounting like how an accounting degree does.

If you have the money, time and energy, the best would be to get a double major with both accounting and finance. If you plan to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination, then you should go in for accounting. CPA is a qualification that you should seriously consider in the corporate field as those three letters behind your name can take you up the ladder to places like CFO and CEO. Most Fortune 500 CFOs are CPAs.

You can get a job in the finance field with an accounting degree but the vice versa is not possible. Though many feel that finance is more interesting than accountancy, it is generally seen that holders of the accounting degree have a bigger and better job options than those who hold a finance degree. Also, accounting degree holders earn better salaries than finance degree holders.

Most companies have an overlap of their Accounts and Finance divisions, thereby leading to more accounting job positions rather than specific finance ones. However, if your heart is set on finance, then preferably do a double major. Then, you won’t be caught in a corner.
